Questions new leaders/co-leaders might ask...

I signed up to be a new leader/co-leader, what do I need to do before I meet with my troop?

At least one of the adult leaders needs to complete Basic Leadership Training (BLT) and received an appointment letter saying you are appointed to the Leader position.

What trainings does a new leader/co-leader need to have?

Basic Leadership Training (BLT) and Program Level Training (PLT). If you are leading a troop in 6th-12th grade, you will have Teen Advisor Training instead of PLT. If you do any activities that might result in injuries or plan on taking field trips, you will need a First Aid and CPR trained adult at that activity or in attendance on the field trip. This adult does not need to be the leader or co-leader.

How long do I have to complete Program Level Training?

Council recommends within three months of appointment, but the quicker you get trained, the more comfortable you will feel with your position. You must complete within 6 months of appointment.

Where do I receive trainings?

BLT is usually given locally. See the Training page of this website or contact Julie Murphy. Other trainings are given through Council. You can find listings in our council magazine The Golden Link, or contact Julie Murphy.

Who do I ask questions?

You should first try contacting your ELF (Experienced Leader Friend). If you do not know who your ELF is, contact Julie Murphy and she will let you know or assign one to you. You can always contact your Service Unit Manager or Assistant Managers for help. Attending Service Unit meetings is also a big help.

General Questions...

What are Service Unit Meetings and why should I attend?

Service Unit Meetings are when the leader, co-leaders and other adult troop members from your area meet to discuss current Girl Scout events, share ideas for troop meetings, field trips, service projects, etc. It is a place to get questions answered and make lasting friendships. Meetings are held once a month. At least one adult representative from your troop should be present at each meeting. It will keep you connected to experienced leaders, what's going on, and when paperwork is due.
